Stuart Evans
Portland, Maine
Spirited and assured, Stuart focuses on conducting meticulous, trauma-informed, neutral investigations and offering an array of other services drawing on his deep experience in the civil rights field.
Investigator Focused on Complex Cases
Stuart has comprehensive experience conducting misconduct investigations in a variety of settings, including in the workplace, on campuses, and laboratories. Relentlessly curious, Stuart is known to “find the needle in the haystack” in even the most complex of cases — and brings an analytical, decisive mind alongside an ability to handle extremely emotional and difficult interactions. Along with his steadfast commitment to conducting balanced investigations, Stuart is known as one of Aleta’s expert writers to those who work closely with him.
Title VI Specialist
Beginning in 2023, Stuart helped spearhead the assistance Aleta provides to institutions experiencing the impact of world events on their campuses. He continues to focus his investigatory skills on matters related to shared ancestry, national origin, and religion, including conducting holistic assessments of campus environments. Additionally, in his former role as Deputy Equal Opportunity Coordinator at a large university, Stuart oversaw the initial assessment of all equal opportunity reports and managed the university’s equal opportunity intake process. Coupled with his previous work as an Investigator for the Maine Human Rights Commission, Stuart has reviewed hundreds of reports on disability, race, and other types of discrimination and harassment.
As a complement to his equal opportunity work, Stuart has advised institutions and clients on ADA and other types of disability-related issues. His deep experience investigating allegations of sexual misconduct comes from his former role as an internal Title IX Investigator at a top-tier, public university where he investigated dozens of sexual and gender-based violence cases. Stuart also worked on campus-wide teams, including the Threat Assessment Team, and gained crucial experience on how to coordinate with campus partners to solve time-sensitive, escalated concerns.
Appellate and Training Services
In addition to conducting major investigations, Stuart is an experienced, neutral appellate officer. He also regularly conducts trainings for clients including trainings regarding institutional policies and equal opportunity policies. In addition, Stuart has developed a comprehensive writing training that highlights best practices for drafting both factual summaries and analyses of claims. Stuart is also the proud recipient of the Chicago-Kent College of Law’s Labor & Employment Law Certificate.
